Vignoles grapes at Hunt Country VineyardsHarvest 2010 Report

by Art Hunt

2010 was a vintage to savor! The Finger Lakes had an early spring, a long hot summer with just enough rainfall and a generally nice fall. It was an almost perfect growing season. The flavors and maturity of the fruit across the board are ideal and the resulting wines promise to be excellent!

In the vineyards we are now working on our fall projects such as installing drainage tile in a few wet spots, and laying down our vinifera canes and covering them with a blanket of hay to protect them from sub-zero temperatures this winter.

Art Hunt, Hunt Country Vineyards founderWe are also removing a few acres of old concord vines to make way for the expansion of Italy Hill Produce, the steadily growing organic produce business of Caroline and Jon.  Fields have been plowed and planted with cover crops and the winter greens are growing nicely.

In the wine cellar, the last of the late harvest is pressed and racking of red wines continues. Harvesting equipment is being cleaned and packed away for another year.

Our inviting tasting room continues to be busy as folks enjoy the late fall weekends and the upcoming holiday events. Demand for our Alchemy -- a delicious dry Cabernet-Merlot blend with 5% Noiret that adds a touch of pepper -- has been particularly outstanding!
